House of How is an independent game studio founded in 2016, a mix of industry vets and college hires, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.
House of How was founded in 2015 by Russ McMackin, as an official name to do indie projects under, while still working fulltime as a Lead Game Designer and Project Lead at Microsoft Studios. HoH at this time was largely a collection of friends just helping each other out on indie projects, and a place to hangout after work and just do some creative stuff. This setup had been going on for many years, but this is when it really became official. Russ spent most of his time at Microsoft doing technical design on games like Gears of War, and then for multiple Kinect titles and a full 5 years on HoloLens.Going Fulltime
Russ quit to go fulltime into HoH in the summer of 2016 to do it "for real". This solo period didn't last long, as Max Schreiber, a recent graduate from The University of Washington became the a full-time hire shortly after. Other friends continued to help as needed as contractors or for mutual favors. In this period, HoH finished up and shipped their first game- Spellcaster Adventure, though it was more just tying the bow on the hobby-project that had been worked on part-time for years while at Microsoft.Recent
Peter Zetterberg joined the crew as Head of Business Development in mid 2017, on the side of being a Director Team Lead on Minecraft at Microsoft. Nearly simultaneously, the team neared completion on the studio's real first game "Spartaga"- A VR title inspired by the years at HoloLens. We have lots of ideas of what we want to do next, including updates for Spartaga, but aren't quite ready to announce anything yet.
